I am professor of human geography at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. My work in urban, political and economic geography is based on Marx’ critique of political economy and tries to understand current processes and to contribute to radical movements’ work and success.
After having done critical research on the way in which the police in Germany, the US and other places is used to govern marginalized populations, particularly in urban settings, I have recently started to get interested in protest policing.
Frankfurt am Main, where I live and work since 2008, has witnessed major radical street protests in 2012 and 2013 under the name of Blockupy against the European crisis management. Together with students and former students, I am trying to understand how the movement dealt with (the threat of) criminalization.
In Christiania, I would like to learn more about the way in which the Free City of Christiania has dealt with the dialectic of radical social protest and repression.
